Warmer Than Normal Winter

Fishing report for the week ending 1/27/2012

Trout fishing has remained excellent, Ruth Schroeder above with one of many slot trout the she and her family caught on thursday. Live shrimp under a popping cork has worked best, but there were several times this week that a bait on the surface did not work best. Warm air and cool water can make the fish less active, when this happens try offering something on the bottom.Luke Schroeder also got in on the action, lots of big ladyfish and a scattered bluefish are making for great nonstop fishing. All indications say that spring will come early this year meaning a early tarpon season, we are taking reservations now. Get yours while they last don”t wait!

Temperature Rollercoaster

Capt. Gary Clark
January 9, 2012
Fort Myers – Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 1/9/2012

Coming from pre-christmas mid 80 degree air and water temps up to 75 to last weeks low 30 degree air and water falling into the 50″s we have seen it all. Don”t tell Rob Wackerman you can”t catch quality fish on a cold day. Above Rob holds a personal best 12 lb. snook caught on a redfish magic.

Rob added this 11 lb. snook above and another 7 lber. below when everything else was hard to come by. Way to go .

In the following days almost everything beside sheepshead were hard to come by. A good note to put in the log book after the fronts find the deep holes and fish lower and slower.

The good news is we have been warming up each day and our next front on wednesday looks to be weaker. We should see fish starting to settle into more of a winter pattern in the next week or two.

Warmer Than Normal December Makes For Great Top-water Action

Fishing report for the week ending 12/15/2011

Top-water plug action has been excellent, this fatty was just under 14 lbs. (it swallowed that skitterwalk) A warmer than normal December is making for some great fishing around Sanibel and San Carlos Bay despite the windy conditions. To go along with some good redfish catches have been some monster trout like the one above. With top-water plugs 4-5 lb. fish have been normal.Good numbers of 20-24 inch redfish are on the flats on low incomming tides. On the higher tides there has been a whole new crop of rat reds (16-17 inch) anywhere you can find oysterbeds. A live shrimp under a popping cork works best.Want to be a hit for Christmas give that special person a fishing charter.

Redfish stay steady with bigger trout in the mix

Redfish have remained steady with bigger trout showing up more with some cooler weather. Pictured below with a redfish caught on a live shrimp under a popping cork.Reds this size have been steadily gaining length and weight and are probably benifitting from the freeze that hurt the snook in 2010.Pictured above is longtime friend Eric Milton with one of the reds. Below is Kody and friend James. All of these fish were caught fishing oysterbars on higher water with live shrimp under a popping cork on a 4/0 circle hook. Pictured below is John Hartley with a nice red from Matlacha pass.John also caught this nice trout, I am seeing more of these larger showing up with the cooler water and air temperatures. With the cooler temps ladyfish, spanish mackerel and a few pompano are being seen in the bay and near the passes.Pictured above more reds caught by David Hood and friends.

Weather and fishing look good in the coming week take advantage of the lack of crowds.

Fall Redfish Are Schooling

Fishing report for the week ending 9/26/2011

Fall redfish are schooling up with good numbers of 3-4lb. fish being found all thru the bay, many of these fish are the ones we had been catching last fall and this spring. These reds are now in the slot and are fat and hungry.Ones like this nice over slot fish Fran Peters caught using cut ladyfish are showing up to join the smaller ones. This is one of my favorite times of the year to throw artificials, topwater skitterwalks and redfish magic.

There are loads of ladyfish and mackerel feeding on small baitfish in the bays, around the passes and off the beaches. Great action.

There have been a few small schools of tarpon showing up in Pine Island sound and off the beaches of Captiva. This is a awsome time to fish, no crowds and hungry schooling fish.

The Last Days Of Summer

Fishing report for the week ending 9/19/2011

The last days of summer have been very slow charter wise which is normal for this time of year. After Irene past by the water quality especially in the river and bay changed dramatically, there is very little if any salt content until you get out near the passes. The mullet run has started signaling that fall is not far away, there are few if any quality shinners in the bay. Most fisherman are using pinfish, grunts or cut bait.

There are good numbers of small baitfish near the passes and in the gulf as evident by the diving birds and mackerel feeding on them. The majority of the snook, redfish, trout and mackerel can be found around the beaches and passes.

With fall approaching redfish will start schooling making for some of my favorite fishing with topwater plugs. My favorite is a skitterwalk either copper or green in color. If you like throwing plugs this is some of the best that we get all year.

The week Irene Past By

Fishing report for the week ending 8/28/2011

With a major hurricane skirting up the east coast the fishing was good staring wednesday with the winds shifting north and some huge high tides. Fishing with Dan Quinn and his family we had two good days catching primarily redfish. With a storm tide and a strong north wind we were able to find the redfish on most points of islands facing the wind. Normally this type of wind brings cooler temperatures and low tides we had just the opposite. All of the redfish were taken on live free linned shinners, in San Carlos Bay. With the approaching storm the Army Corp of enginners were dumping Lake Okechobee causing salinity levels to drop dramatically. This made for fewer snook being caught, we did catch several nice flounder at one stop that along with a redfish and snapper made dinner that night.

Rain Cooled Water Makes Trout And Redfish Turn On

Fishing report for the week ending 8/23/2011

As in every August our water temperatures rise to near 90 degrees that can slow fishing. We have had several rain cooled days sometimes to or three in a row that last all day. I have had several brave folks that will fish in these conditions and in most cases they turn out to be the best fishing days of the week.Redfish and trout have really been good on these days taking advantage of the cooler water to feed. Redfish on the higher water around mangrove shorelines or oysterbars have been eating almost everything, shinners either free linned or under a popping cork, pinfish and cut bait.

Trout have been best around the beaches and passes anywhere schools of bait can be found. I will usually find the bait, get away a bit and chum with shinners to get them going. Spanish mackerel almost always show up in these same areas.

With a strong storm comming to Florida”s east coast later in the week it  appears that the army cour  of enginers are dumping water from lake O changing the salinity levels in the mouth of the river. With this change there  are less mangrove snappers and snook being caught now.
